Why it Pays to Get Curious With Your Wellbeing

How often do you try something new? Look inward? Check in with other people? In other words, how often do you get curious?

When it comes to looking after our wellbeing, curiosity is an absolutely essential component of our personal journeys – but we don’t always exercise curiosity as often as we could.

A sense of curiosity helps us to keep things fresh, encourages us to keep on learning, and motivates us to keep on discovering new approaches for building, protecting and maintaining our inner calm. It’s what stops us from giving up on our wellbeing when we try out a new exercise class we hate; it’s what gives us hope that the right thing is out there, just waiting for us.

At FormScore, we often talk about the importance of being intentional about your wellbeing, and this comes from a place of curiosity.

Achieving positive wellbeing isn’t something that happens to you: you have to make it happen. You do that through good diet, regular exercise, meaningful connections, work-life balance, plenty of rest, looking after your finances, finding purpose, helping others, managing stress, and finding your joy – but each of those things look different to everyone.

Be Curious About YOUR Wellbeing

Trial and error is at the very heart of your personal wellbeing journey. There are SO many different activities out there; different tools; different resources – and what works for your partner, parents, friends or colleagues won’t necessarily work for you. If it did, businesses all over the world would be sitting pretty with one blanket wellbeing solution to keep millions of employees happy.

But life isn’t like that.

This is your journey of self-discovery, and it should be filled with fun, shaken up with missteps, and illuminated by hope.

You might find that nothing boosts your wellbeing like trekking up a mountain, sitting in a freezing cold well (ahem, Rob Stephenson), or mastering every yoga pose in the book; or, you might discover that you’re at your best when relaxing in a spa, dining out with close friends, or spending time alone in nature.

The point is that unless you exercise your curiosity, each and every day, you’ll never know what works for you: the ever-evolving you that’s subject to change, without a moment’s notice.

So try new things; be curious; experiment – and never stop learning what brings you energy, peace, and joy.

Be Curious About Others

Looking outward, beyond ourselves, is incredibly powerful for our own wellbeing. It also makes us better placed to support others on their journey.

Mental health can be a pretty heavy subject, but wellbeing doesn’t have to be. You can check in with the people around you by simply asking: “How are you, today?” Then ask again to really get to the heart of things.

It’s also important to ask yourself this question at least once a day. Look inward at how you’re feeling, and be curious about your why, what’s going on for you, and how you can make a positive change.

For any people leaders out there, you’re uniquely placed to exercise your curiosity in a really powerful way. Focus on creating psychologically safe spaces where people can confide in you, or simply be themselves without fear of judgment. Get curious about what it means to value people over profits, and to prioritise wellbeing above all else. And encourage your employees to get curious about their own wellbeing; after all, curiosity is the precursor to creativity, and the more creativity you unlock in your people, the more success you’re likely to enjoy.

Ultimately, it’s important to recognise that we’re all on our own journey, that we’ll all respond to activities, situations and stimulus differently, but that we can all support one another along the way.
